Rist Canyon Inn Wedding | Video Feature

Updated: Jul 6, 2020

I think wedding videography is sort of like a time capsule. You take moments from your wedding and replay them in the future for your kids, family, and older selves to revel upon. Alyson & Jake's June wedding at Rist Canyon Inn felt especially important to historicize given the nature of our current world. They had an intimate celebration due to COVID-19, and I was committed to creating video that really embodied the feelings of the day. This way, loved ones unable to attend could have a way into their wedding virtually.

Rist Canyon Inn, a rustic & refined dream of a venue right near Old Town Fort Collins, reminded me why shooting weddings in Colorado is such a privilege. There are so many highlights from this space. Twenty acres of lush green pastures, a quaint 1896 farmhouse, old growth trees that seem to envelop you and give you a sense of peace, multiple houses for bridal/groom prep & reception, a shimmering creek, rustic fences, and a wildly spacious ceremony pasture. There is a real feeling of calm at Rist Canyon, the kind you get when you take a moment to breathe Colorado in and let it wash over you.

We felt the small details were king for this wedding, so I put an emphasis on incorporating intricate moments between the key ones. Close up shots of hands opening special gifts, flower girls getting their hair done, Alyson peeking out the window to spy on Jake during prep, I believe these tiny moments add up to a full experience. Drone shots flying through the mountains near Rist Canyon with voiceover narration from their Officiant was employed to create a larger than life experience of their venue. As a wedding videographer, I'm always searching for ways to make life grand, then shrink it into micro detail, and then expand it once more. That, I believe, is the power of video.

This wedding was full of laughter, something greatly needed at this time. I love when a Bride & Groom can be goofy with each other on their big day. Some of my favorite funny moments were Alyson's vows: "When I first met you, I thought you were weird. I wasn't wrong." There were also insanely comical gifts exchanged during prep, including what I believe to be portraits of their dogs in Elizabethan clothing. I feel like we can all take a page from Alyson & Jake. They had such a laid back sense of calm even in spite of having to reimagine their giant day and seemed to not let anything stop them from laughing, celebrating, & enjoying their wedding. It was a great reminder that love will never be cancelled.

So, with that, here are some memories from Alyson & Jake's July union. Thank you to everyone who made it possible & perfect.
